What Are Green Certifications? SGLS? SGBP?

In the tile manufacturing industry, recognising and addressing its potential environmental impacts is crucial. For example, these impacts may stem from the raw materials, the carbon emissions from the manufacturing process, or during the transportation of goods.

In order to assist businesses and consumers in identifying environmentally preferred products, there are two renowned green certifications in Singapore. Consequently, these certifications help distinguish green manufacturers within the building industry.

The two types of green certifications are Singapore Green Label Scheme (SGLS) and Singapore Green Building Product (SGBP).

Singapore Green Label Scheme (SGLS)

The SGLS, administered by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) since 1999, is Singapore’s foremost environmental standard and certification mark. It covers over 3,800 unique products across 43 countries. Notably, this scheme aids the public in easily identifying environmentally preferred products that meet rigorous eco-standards. For instance, eco-friendly porcelain tiles.

  • Understanding SEC

The SEC is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation (NGO) and an institution of public character (IPC). SEC is the only Singapore eco-labelling body and it is a member of the Global Eco-Labelling Network (GEN).  The SEC collaborates with the National Environment Agency (NEA) to establish a transparent green certification process complying to the highest international standards, specifically ISO 14024.

  • Understanding SGLS Certification

The SGLS is a Type 1 eco-label, recognised for its high credibility due to independent third-party verification based on life cycle considerations. It assesses the main environmental impacts of a product and sets compliance limits to mitigate these impacts. Products must be categorised under one of the SGLS product categories and meet all specified requirements to achieve certification.

Singapore Green Building Product (SGBP)

Administered by the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC), the SGBP is developed based on scientific and engineering principles and leverages the collective knowledge of the building and construction industry. The scheme promotes a greener, more carbon-efficient built environment and facilitates sustainable procurement, ensuring transparency and credibility in the products chosen for green building projects.

  • Understanding SGBC

Launched on October 28, 2009, SGBC is the only non-profit organization in Singapore with a private-public sector partnership aimed at achieving a world-class, sustainable built environment. SGBC advocates for green building design, practices, and technologies. It drives environmental sustainability in the building and construction industry. As Singapore’s representative on the World Green Building Council, SGBC contributes to the global green building movement through international collaboration and knowledge sharing.

  • Understanding SGBP Certification

The SGBP certification is a key standard for green building products in Singapore, recognised under the Green Mark Scheme administered by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA). Certified products contribute points towards a project’s Green Mark rating, with higher-rated products earning more points. The SGBP complies with many requirements of ISO 14024 and aligns with international eco-labels such as Cradle2Cradle, DECLARE, and Korea Environmental Industry and Technology Institute.

1. Reduced Carbon Footprint

Porcelain tiles certified under SGBP and SGLS adhere to strict standards that minimise carbon emissions, contributing to lower greenhouse gas levels.

2. Sustainable Resource Use

These certifications ensure porcelain tiles are made using sustainable materials and processes, reducing the depletion of natural resources.

3. Waste Reduction

The certifications promote the use of recycled materials and efficient manufacturing processes, leading to less waste generation. Furthermore, certified porcelain tiles are often more durable and require less maintenance.

  • Health Benefits

1. Improved Indoor Air Quality

Porcelain tiles certified under SGBP and SGLS contribute to better indoor air quality by minimising volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants.

2. Healthier Living Spaces

Using eco-friendly porcelain tiles reduces exposure to harmful chemicals, promoting healthier living conditions for occupants.
